Arena was designed by German architect Fred Yanish. The actual construction
was done by volunteer carpenters and towns people from Eagle River. The
construction was supervised by Mr. Chuck Taylor, who, at the time, owned
the Jack-O-Lantern Lodge. The design was a new and different building concept
and made the arena the Showcase of the North.
In 1963, the arena was purchased outright by the Eagle River Recreation Association (E.R.R.A.), a non-profit organization, with an FHA loan for $30,000 and over $50,000 in public donations. With this money, the arena was remodeled and a new roof, lobby, dressing rooms, inside plumbing, and a concession stand were aded. Also at this time a used ice plant was installed. Unfotunatly it was not sufficient in size or reliability to handle the ever increasing demand of ice time. So once again thanks to the people of Eagle River and the surrounding communities enough donations were collected to buy a new and larger compressor. In the Fall/Winter of 1995-1996 the dream of adding a second rink with a roof over it became a reality. the second rink is Olympic size and gives our skaters more ice time. The Eagle River Sports Arena is also the home of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame which was established in 1975. Wisconsin is the only state in the country which has established a Hockey Hall of Fame. There are currently 69 inductees including players and coaches. Area towns and townships, as well as businesses and donations from private individuals, continue to help support the ERRA youth programs financially. The Sports Arena is also the site of other fund raising activities sponsored by the ERRA, such as the Youth Days Auction, Fall Festival, and the Silver Blades Ice Show. We wish to thank the parents of the area youth and the community as a whole for the endless hours of time, talent, and money that all contribute to help make the E.R.R.A. the success that it is today. |
