Meet the Instructors


Northern Freeze is known for providing an intense and disciplined training environment.  This is the most dedicated and disciplined hockey instruction team anywhere.  The tone of the training environment is set by an organized and disciplined staff.

Each program’s instruction team is made up of a Lead Instructor, senior instructors, and junior instructors.  Instructors are mostly active players that compete at various levels from AAA to NCAA.  Prior to becoming instructors they are trained by the Northern Freeze Training Program and must meet exceptional leadership and teaching standards to continue as an instructor.


 

Phil Simeon, Director

Teaching Experience:

  • Phil established Northern Freeze and has been running the program for the past 7 years
  • He is responsible for strategic planning, curriculum design, leading the instruction team, and most importantly teaching developing hockey players
  • Phil is known for his intensity and demanding a disciplined and focused teaching environment
  • Prior to Northern Freeze he was a lead instructor at Minnesota Eurocan in Minneapolis and Charlottetown Hockey Schools in Canada
  • Phil has over 15 years experience in teaching and training amateur hockey players
  • For 3 years he was assistant coach with the Royal Military College of Canada varsity hockey program (Canadian Interuniversity Sport)
  • Hockey Canada certified coach 

Playing Experience:

  • Canadian Interuniversity Sport varsity hockey team member with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers UPEI (1996 - 1999)
  • Academic All Canadian
  • UPEI Leadership Award Recipient, 1998
  • UPEI Booster Club Award Recipient, 1999

Education:

Phil has a Master of Public Administration degree from Queen's University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Prince Edward Island

 

Marc Draper, Operations Director

Teaching Experience:

  • Marc has been in this position since the program's inception in 2001
  • He is responsible for curriculum design and implementation, instructor development and training, administration, and most importantly teaching developing hockey players
  • Marc is a creative teacher and maximizes each student's potential
  • Marc has extensive individual skill drill knowledge from the most basic to the most challenging
  • Prior to Northern Freeze he was lead instructor at Minnesota Eurocan in Minneapolis
  • Marc has over 15 years experience in teaching and developing amateur hockey players
  • He has served as an amateur hockey coach for many seasons in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas
  • He also has a leadership role in administering the Minneapolis Adult Hockey League

Playing Experience:

  • NCAA Division III varsity hockey team member with Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
  • Minnesota Junior Hockey League, St. Paul Steers team member and leading scorer

 


 

Jason Fredricks, Lead Instructor

Teaching Profile:

  • Jason has been in various roles since the program's inception in 2001
  • Jason is responsible for curriculum implementation, program coordination, leading on-ice sessions, and teaching in all environments
  • Jason brings an unmatched focus and dedication to teaching when he steps on the ice - he demands perfection
  • Based on his genuine passion for the game Jason is known to drive and motivate players past their potential
  • Jason is also a lead instructor and coach at Shattuck St. Mary’s Hockey Camps in Faribault, Minnesota.

Playing Experience:

  • NCAA Division I with Colgate University, Hamilton, NY (2005-present)
  • Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep Team, Faribault, MN  (2003-2005)
  • 2005 USA Hockey U-18 National Championship
  • USA Hockey Select 15, Select 16 and Select 17 Festivals


Brian Schneekloth, Lead Instructor

Teaching Experience:

  • Brian has been an instructor with Northern Freeze for the past 4 years
  • He is responsible for leading on-ice sessions, drill progression, on-ice equipment coordination, and teaching in all environments
  • Brian is the only instructor to carry the title of Master Demonstrator which refers to his ability to perform over 1,000 drills to perfection
  • He has developed his drill perfection by performing well over 5,000 repetitions during his time as a student and instructor
  • Brian's work ethic is unmatched and an example for all developing players

Playing Experience:

  • Marquette University (Club Team), 2007 Captain
  • Green Bay Jr. Gamblers, AAA
  • Neenah Varsity High School
 

The other instructors are active players currently playing at the college,  junior, or high school level.  These players are very proficient at demonstrating the skills being taught.  There is generally 6 instructors on ice and we strive to keep student instructor ratio around 7:1.
